This
adventure drama has all the elements that make
a great western movie. Powerful acting, chilling
bad guys, a morality play in virtually every
scene. Ben Wade's pistol has a cross in the
butt, and is refered to as the, "The
right hand of God." Well, here's
the hat band. The brass lonestar concho goes
great with our brass tacks hatband, or choose
some green embossed leather for a little different
look.

NEW
May 2008

In
2007 Ben Foster created a truly memorable bad-guy
in the excellent re-make of the Classic
Western, 3:10 TO YUMA
History
of the Schofield Pistol |
There
are many memorable hats and characters in the
remake of the 3:10 to Yuma. None more
so then the character Charley Prince.
Often
what makes a western unforgetable is the bad
guys. Think of the ruthless, threatening nature
of the gunfighter character of Wilson
(played by Jack Palance) from the great western,
Shane. Or the absolute evil of the Indian
Shaman from The Missing, with Eric Schweige
crafting that devilish Brujo. Charley
Prince is in fine company or perhaps we
should say, devilish company. |

Add this custom wind string/
Stampede string to any of our hats for $25.00. |
The
Conagher
Crown: Tri-Pinch |
Brim: Hand Shaped Open
Hatband: 1/4" Custom Wind string | Color
as shown: Bone |
|
In
the old west wind strings often doubled as the
hat band. The leather was wrapped around the
crown until the desired width was reached. There's
a 1 1/2 times wrap on the Conagher - giving
the look on the right.
Our
hat's off to Stacy Allen for ordering the first
one - and here's what Mister Allen had to say
about his custom 20X Conagher. "My
new hat arrived the 27th. It is everything I
could hope for and much more. Thanks for creating
the special wind string! As is commonly stated
down South when one is well satisfied with results,
"I'm standing in tall cotton.".
- Best regards, Stacy.

Making
clients happy is what we do.
"Hello Longfellow. . .you really came up with
a near perfect reproduction of Costner's {Open Range}
Hat. This is what I wanted and it was very important
to me. . .I will cherish this hat the rest of my life
and I will wear it proudly. You're a real stand up
guy and I wish I could shake your hand! Thanks again."

Aidan Quinn ably portrayed the oldest son, Alfred,
in Legends of the Fall - another excellent
western movie filmed in and around Calgary.
The fore father of the Open Road crown shape,
this hat looks good anywhere you might like
to wear it.
The
character, Alfred Ludlow, was the eldest of
the three brothers, and constantly seeking his
father's favor. Alfred grew to be a successful
business man, and later a politician, who married
the woman his other brother's couldn't.

Trail
Dust
Another quality hat service from
The Last Best West.
Many
customers have been requesting that we dirty
up their new hats to make them look trail worn.
Pictured at right is a Dusty Augustus - our
Augustus
with about 2 years worth of trail dust - as
if a working cowboy had been wearing it.
We've
got three different degrees of trail dust. Light
(add $55.00) - medium (add $75.00), and antiquing
(add $95.00). Light would be what you see at
the right on the Dusty Augustus; medium would
be heavy sweat stains, like Tom Selleck sports
on the Quigley;
and antiquing looks like our Captain
York Cavalry Hat.
This
is a similar process that costume designers
apply to hats in the movies and t.v. Looks authentic
and yer friends will swear yer just got off
a trail drive, or a hitch in the Horse Cavalry!
You
can add trail dust during the check out process
- or request it when you call your order in.

The
Hickok
Crown:
Texas Straight
Brim: Pencil rolled Bound

Color as shown: Black
Another
version of the Boss of the Plains - this is
our best guess on what Wild Bill was wearing
in the inset picture on the left. We start with
an oversized hat body to make this classic western
hat.

|
Brim's
worked different - but essentially the same
hat Keith Carradine sports as Wild Bill in
HBO's Deadwood.
|
Red
Cahoun of the Silver Spur Gunfighters keeps
the faith with his Custom Hickock.

If
you think you are seeing the same hat as the 3:10
to Yuma hat - above - you are. The Quirt and the Yuma
are very close with the dimensions of the Yuma slightly
smaller. Another illustration of how many hats in
today's westerns, are variations of hats seen in movies
since the early days of cinema. |
The Quirt
Crown:
Telescope
Brim:
Hand shaped Bound
Hatband: 1" satin with bow.
Color as shown: Black
For
our money one of the top 20 western movies ever
made, Angel and the Bad man showcases
big John as the deadly pistol fighter Quirt
Evans. Wayne wears a dark and a light gunman's
hat in the movie. The light has the centre of
the crown pushed down, and the dark with the
same creasing you see here. We'll fashion it
either way for you. Inset hat was a customer
request for a contrasting bound brim and hat
band in white satin. This was a favourite look
for gamblers in western movies.

Yancey
NEW
APRIL 2008
Crown:
Telescope.
Brim: Pencil rolled -
Open
Hatband: 1 1/2" Satin with Bow
Color as shown: Bone in Pure Beaver
fur-felt.
Here's
a good example of how we can accomadate most
customer requests. This client liked the crown
on the Quirt, The width
of brim on the Hickok,
and the pencil roll and shape of the brim on
the Broken
Trail hat. The Yancey is the result. A classy
looking hat, with a unique, distinctive design.
Here's what Mister Stephany said, after he received
his "Frankenstein hat".
"
It (The Yancey) looks fabulous. You did a fine
job. Its good to see people are still making
quality hand made products." Thank-you,
Greg Stephany

A
Note about Color Color
variances caused by individual computer monitors
are beyond our control.
Light
colors will reflect heat the best - while dark
colors will retain the heat the most - with
black being the worst for staying hot (black
absorbs sunlight). However black is the most
formal color so bowlers and top hats were generally
black or dark gray. For the first 15-20 years
cowboy hats were marketed - your choice of color
was about 3 shades of brown.
