Deadwood Steel Custom Knives
-
"That ain't a knife - it's a work of art!"
-
Our
Knife Making Process
Seen pictured at left. Our Knife
Master starts with an old band saw
blade - then with a torch cuts out the rough knife
shape. Next the knife blank is ground into it's
final shape, then put thru the furnace for hardening
and tempering. Then the steel is cooled and ready
for the handle and finally, sharpening. Labour
intensive the method has changed little since
the Old West, our only concession is we use an
acetylene torch to cut the rough knife blank from
the massive band-saw blade.

Deadwood
Steel Artistry
What
sets our knives apart and identifies them is
the unique burnishing done to the brass blade
guard and pommel. When you see this distinguishing
feature you'll know it's a Deadwood Steel Custom
Knife.
Work-a-day
knife - or work of art? Most people would say
both.
Traditional Cowboy Knives - Old West Quality
The high carbon steel in commercial
forestry blades is some of the hardest produced.
We recycle the worn-out blades and make world-class
knife's out of them. Some blades may have slight
pitting caused when the rust is ground out.
This will not affect the knives performance
in the slightest, and was very common in the
19th century. Each custom blade comes individually
numbered, and with a top quality heavy leather
sheath. Knife leather is available in your choice
of four colors:
Black, light brown, tan, dark brown.
Our Deadwood Steel Knives' take and hold an
edge exceptionally well, and will give you a
lifetime of fine use.
You've tried the rest - now own one of the best
working knives available.

Knife
at left has an Horn handle that wonderfully
conforms to the hand. Shown with black sheath
and lone star concho.
All
the knives shown on this page are examples -
your knife will be similar but not exactly what
is seen here. |
|
The
knife at left has more of a curved blade and a
trailing point - that is the point of the knife
is higher than the spine or body of the knife.
This knife has a walnut hardwood handle.
Availability of the types of hardwood varies -
so check with us if a wood handle is for you. |
|
At
left is a massive skinner with a graphite stone
handle. This is a heavy knife with the handle
fashioned from a graphite core sample. Brass Pommel
and blade guard. Limited stone is available. This
knife has a trailing point - but blade can be
fashioned with a straight spine if preferred.
The black and brass look dynamic together. |

Cowboy's
and their knives
Every cowpoke carried one, and to a traditional
cowboy of the 19th century the most important
thing about his knife was it's functionality.
Most cowboys weren't too flashy - oh they might
have a bright colored shirt, bandana or two -
but their work-a-day tools needed to be made well,
and stand up to robust use. Their knives were
usually made from worn out files - they already
had the tang for the handle, and with some time
and sweat the narrow blade could be sharpened
to a fine edge, and point. But if a blacksmith
in a particular area had a reputation (Like
James Black of Bowie Knife fame) for making
a good knife - and the cowboy had the money -
he'd buy one. Now you can too. |

Traditional
Bowie
Our
knife was made to the legendary
Blacksmith James Black's original
specifications from 1830. This
is his modified version of Jim
Bowie's original hand-carved knife
model. The sharpened edge on the
curved top edge of the blade was
Black's noteworthy addition. As
Crocodile Dundee would say, "Now
that's a knife!"
Because
of Bowie's fame and his fighting
skill with this design, most men
heading west or into the mountains,
after 1830, wanted a knife like
his. By the 1840s, large knife
factories, like Sheffield's in
England, were mass producing these
Bowie blades. By the 1870s not
as many were seen around the western
frontier - as the blade is too
large for a cowboy when mounted
- although some would have been
seen as saddle knives.
Dimensions
9 1/2" blade length. 1/4"
thick steel blade. Wide blade
guard. Hardwood handle. Knife
can be customized to the blade

Longfellow
researched the designs based on historical photos
and original mail order catalogues from the
late 1800's and the early decades of the 20th
Century. Of particular help was the Smithsonian
Website, the Library, and the archives of the
Glenbow Museum in Calgary. And of course those
great Hollywood Westerns.
