A great role for Tommy Lee Jones; CaptainWoodrow
Call is an uncompromising man that lives his life
in stoic silence, with only Augustus McCrae
willing to challenge his surly moods.
Like
the character this hat is simple, unrefined, and basic.
A classic Boss

on the bound brim. Add our classic
windstring {if you wish} during the checkout process.
We've
made a number of custom hats for serving soldiers,

Gus McCrae: "You know how it works Jake, you

Tommy
Lee Jones hat from The Missing. Color: Pecan :: Crown:Open
:: Brim: Bound
Gentle hand roll. Hatband: Satin Ribbon with bow, with matching
bound edge.
Tommy Lee Jones seems to favor these open crowned
style cowboy hats. Here's another, from that outstanding
western; The Missing.
Very
well acted, The Missing is a dark western full of
mystical moments, and eirie themes. Likely a little
too intense for most people, this western from 2003
has one of the truly memorable bad-guys from film,
the Brujo, played by Eric Schweig. Click

OUR
MOST COMMON HAT QUESTION
Q: I'm looking for a ____ Hat. I checked your product
catalogue and didn't see it. Can you make it?
A: Yes. As I'm sure you can appreciate it's just not possible
to show all the different variations of crowns and brims.
If it's made from fur-felt and you can supply us a good
picture - yes we can make it. Generally we already carry
the same style of hat, we just shape it based on the photo
or if it's a movie hat we shape it from watching the movie
and seeing the hat from all possible angles to get the look
just so. We can do up to a 7" (inch) high crown
and a 6" wide brim. Click

Where'd
those great Cowboy Hats from the Western Movies come
from?
Many were versions of traditional cowboy hats from
the 1800s - but most were from the imaginations of
the early movie stars like Tom Mix. The old "B"
Westerns from the 1930s and 40s were rife with grandiose
Cowboy Hats. Many of today's most popular mass
produced cowboy hat designs were first seen in the
Movies. Want
to read a dynamic western story?
A
still from a silent western from the 1920s. Notice
the "Sugarloaf"
Western Sombrero on the left. This shape was the
transition from a straight sombrero to the Cowboy
Hat. The actor in the middle is wearing a version
of our "Champie"
Nothings
new under the Sun! Henry Fonda as Wyatt Earp in
My Darling Clementine {1946} The shape of
his Cowboy Hat is almost the same as hats in later
Western Movies: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance,
and Open Range.
A
young Ben Johnson with a great Character
Hat in the classic western, She Wore A Yellow
Ribbon {1949}
Alan Ladd as "Shane" {1953} wearing a
gunfighter style cowboy hat similar to our version
- the Hidalgo.

The
Sundance Kid
Robert
Redford's hat from Butch Cassidy. . . . Color: Chocolate :: Crown:Telescope
Brim: Open
Gentle hand roll. Hatband: Custom 1/2" distressed brown
leather.
Steve McQueen or Marlon Brando were the movie studio's
choice to play the Sundance Kid. But Paul Newman
and the director; George Roy Hill had their way and
Robert Redford was cast.
The
movie was a smash, making Redford a star, and the
movie song by Bacharach and David, won the academy
award for best song: Raindrops keep Falling on
my Head.
FRONTIER
FUR FELT
The Dodge City is shown in long hair Beaver fur-felt.
Some call it SHAGGY some call it GRIZZLY, we prefer
the name FRONTIER fur-felt to describe it, as this
is unsanded, and would have been what the very first
beaver fur-felt would have been like. Not as long
as Bill Cody's hat to the right, but longer than
today's standard hat bodies.
You've
likely seen this look before in a western movie.
You can generally spot a long haired fur-felt in
most of the westerns filmed in the 1930s and 40s.
Errol Flynn wore it in several of his western movie's.
Has
all the same characteristics as our fine, standard
hat bodies - just a longer finish to the fur of
the hat.
You
can request Frontier Fur Felt for any of our hats,
when your hat details are confirmed with Sonja,
within a day of your purchase being made.
No extra charge.

After
filming The Adventures of Robin Hood,
Warner Brothers top action star; Errol Flynn
was rushed into his first western role, in
the 1939 western; Dodge City. The movie
is quite entertaining, with Flynn playing
Wade Hatton with more than a dash of
Robin Hood - if you catch my drift.
Flynn favoured this hat shape in many of the
westerns he later appeared in.

Leather Products
All
our Cowboy leather has been researched and
designed; tried and tested by Longfellow
in Old West Shows and at Cowboy Action Shoots. Our holsters; belts and chaps are based
on pictures from museums, archival photos
and mail order catalogues from the late 1800s
and early decades of the 20th century.
ALL
OUR HOLSTERS ARE LINED. Our gunbelt backs
are suede so the belt stays where it is buckled.
We try to stay as true to the old west makers
as we can, and have incorporated what we found
works over years of wear and use. Any of our
fine leather products would suit a lady just
fine.
Our
Leather Master has been working with leather,

Note:
Our custom Hat bands, like our hats are made by hand.
Cuts may be slightly irregular - compared to manufactured
hatband's cut and assembled by machine. Each band is
unique, well made and will last. Your hat band will
be similar but not exactly what is seen here. We are
staying true to the cowboy tradition of making your
own hat band. If you expect perfection please buy your
own mass produced, machine made hat band, or go for
a satin ribbon and bow. Thank-you.
The
Charley Prince Hat Crown:
Telescope
Brim: Hand shaped - Open Hatband: Custom 1" leather Color as Shown: Black in 50%
Beaver Fur-felt
There
are many memorable hats and characters in the
remake of the 3:10 to Yuma. None more
so then the character Charley Prince.
Often
what makes a western unforgettable is the bad
guys. Think of the ruthless, threatening nature
of the gunfighter character of Wilson
(played by Jack Palance) from the great western,
Shane. Or the absolute evil of the Indian
Shaman from The Missing, with Eric Schweige
crafting that devilish Brujo. Charley
Prince is in fine company or perhaps we
should say, devilish company.

Beaver Fur-felt
Tom
Berringer is the loveable rogue of a modern
day Bounty Hunter; Lewis Gates, in the
entertaining 1995 western; Last of the Dogmen.
The
Alberta Rocky Mountains at Banff is the setting
for this movie, which was filmed within an hour
of where we are in The Last Best West. Other
than the fact the ending is over the top, the
acting is good, the story intriquing enough
to hold your interest, not to mention Barbra
Hershey in jeans.
How
good is that?
One
of the movies star's is a blue Australian Cattle
Dog called Zip, who plays Gates' side
kick, and as is the case with many side kicks,
this dogs a real scene stealer.
Anyone
who's owned an Australian Cattle Dog, knows
how smart they are, and the special bond that
the breed forms with their owner.

One
of our all time favourite westerns ever - Conagher
as portrayed by Sam Elliot captures perfectly
the spirit of an old west wrangler. And as a
visitor recently reminded us - Con Conagher
carried a Schofield
in his holster.
The
complications of doing his job and Conagher's
moral standards are powerful story lines in
this well made film.
Our
hat's off to Stacy Allen of Shiloh National
Cemetery for ordering the first one - and here's
what Mister Allen had to say about his custom
20X Conagher. "My new hat arrived the

much more. Thanks for creating the special wind

one is well satisfied with results, 'I'm
standing in tall cotton.'. - Best regards,

Note about Color Color
variances caused by individual computer monitors
are beyond our control. Light
colors will reflect heat the best - while dark
colors will retain the heat the most - with
black being the worst for staying hot (black
absorbs sunlight). However black is the most
formal color so bowlers and top hats were generally
black or dark gray. For the first 15-20 years
cowboy hats were marketed - your choice of color
was black and about 3 shades of brown.

Trail
Dust
Many
customers have been requesting that we dirty
up their new hats to make them look trail worn.
Pictured at right is a Dusty Augustus - our
Augustus
with about 2 years worth of trail dust - as

We've
got three different degrees of trail dust. Light
(add $55.00) - medium (add $75.00), and heavy
(add $95.00). Light would be what you see at
the left on the Dusty Augustus; medium would
be like the dusting on the Rossiter; and heavy trail dust looks
like our Josey
Wales.
This
is a similar process that costume designers
apply to hats in the movies and t. v. Looks
authentic and yer friends will swear yer just
got off a trail drive, or a hitch in the Horse
Cavalry! You can add trail dust during the check
out process - or request it when you call your

Colonel

Richard
Widmark Cavalry Hat Crown: 3 pinch cavalry
crease - pecan top.
Brim: Hand worked Open
Hatband: 1" satin with bow.
Color before soiling: Sand
William
Holden and Richard Widmark are the stars of
this slow moving western story set near the
end of the Civil War. Not a lot of action in
this flick, but some very interesting hats.
If you watch the movie, you may find it hard
to believe that any soldier would wear such
a filthy falling-apart-hat. Then I realized
a hat such as this was the Colonel's badge of
courage, dirty yes, but a comrade that lived
through the horrors of the war, and survived.
Just like Widmark's character Col. Tom Rossiter.
The
hat ships clean and unsoiled. The hat at left
has our medium soiling on it. Make your choice
during the checkout process.
Add
a top quality cavalry cord with acorns for 15
dollars. It slides over the existing satin ribbon
and bow - like they did back in the day.
Captain

John
Wayne Cavalry Hat Crown: front pinch;
"diamond" shaped crown top
Brim: Hand worked Open
upturn at the front
Hatband: 1 1/2" satin with bow.
Color when new: Sand
Immortalized
in the John Ford Cavalry Trilogy - this is the
same look sported by John Wayne in those three
great movies: She Wore a Yellow Ribbon; Fort
Apache, and Rio Grande.
In Rio Bravo (1959} Wayne wears
this look as Sheriff John T. Chance.
The crown has the unique "diamond"
design, and the brim has been curled up - can
be curled higher or lower as you wish.
Click
for the badge Wayne wore.
Buy
the hat new or have us dirty it up. The hat
at left has been aged to the point that it looks
like it's from the 19th century. Less dramatic
soiling is available.
The
Dunson Crown:
Telescope
Brim: Hand curled (Red River Version) Bound
Hatband: Custom 1" leather.
Color: Black
John
Wayne favored this crown shape in many of his
best westerns. By changing the brim shape it's
easy to show several different looks of the
same basic hat design.
We
start with an oversized hat body for our custom
hat, and you can choose your brim working. The
Duke's look from The Searchers; Red
River; or The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
Make your choice during the check out process.
These
three classic westerns would easily make most
peoples top ten western movies ever, and the
acting job Wayne does in The Searchers,
may be his best on film.
And
it's easy to see where the inspiration for Angie
Dickinson's character in Rio Bravo came
from. Just listen to the fresh talking Tess
Millay played by Joanne Dru in Red River
and you'll know.

How
to make an Old West Character Cowboy Hat
Now that you've seen our great
hats we're sure you'll want your own Custom
Hat - so what are you going to do with your
old one? It'd be a pity to relegate it to discard.
Our solution is to rotate it out and make a
great Character Hat.
Years
ago I read a story about how Tom Mix used to
crease and work all his custom hats himself
in the shower. So I decided to take his advice
and am more than pleased with the results. The
amount of time it takes is up to you. I had
the Ellsworth fashioned in less than 5 minutes
- then a further half hour fine tuning the look.
The steps I went through are pretty simple.
