Where'd
those great Cowboy Hats from the Western Movies come
from?
Many were versions of traditional cowboy hats from
the 1800s - but most were from the imaginations of
the early movie stars like Tom Mix. The old "B"
Westerns from the 1930s and 40s were rife with grandiose
Cowboy Hats. Many of today's most popular mass
produced cowboy hat designs were first seen in the
Movies.

Steve McQueen or Marlon Brando were the movie studio's
choice to play the Sundance Kid. But Paul Newman
and the director; George Roy Hill had their way and
Robert Redford was cast.
The
movie was a smash, making Redford a star, and the
movie song by Bacharach and David, won the academy
award for best song: Raindrops keep Falling on
my Head.

Some call it SHAGGY some call it GRIZZLY, we prefer

You can generally spot a long haired fur-felt in
most of the westerns filmed in the 1930s and 40s.
Errol Flynn wore it in several of his western movie's.

filming The Adventures of Robin Hood,
Warner Brothers top action star; Errol Flynn
was rushed into his first western role, in
the 1939 western; Dodge City. The movie
is quite entertaining, with Flynn playing
Wade Hatton with more than a dash of
Robin Hood - if you catch my drift.
Flynn favoured this hat shape in many of the
westerns he later appeared in.

is a new hat design for us based on what we
think Yellowstone Kelly is wearing at right.
The brim we have pretty dang close and we have
used a crown treatment that would have been
in keeping with the style exhibited by this
cultured warrior.
The
historical Luther S. "Yellowstone"
Kelly was a celebrity during his life. Born
in New York in 1849 he fought during the Civil
War and finished his army career out west on
the frontier. Yellowstone earned his moniker
during the 1870s and 80s exploring/trapping
and scouting for the army in the Yellowstone
River basin. Very intelligent and well read,
it was not uncommon for Kelly to quote Shakespeare
as he went about his business. More

Warner
Brothers made a standard formula western featuring
its remuda of contract TV actors, with Clint
Walker (bottom right) playing the lead in the
1959 western; Yellowstone Kelly.

Dolarhyde's son and dozens of other townfolk
are abducted, Dolarhyde, bands with the
outlaw Lonergan, and other men in
the area and set off after the Aliens. Big actors,
big adventure, and big special effects.

is good, and the story is intriguing enough
to hold your interest, not to mention seeing
Barbra Hershey in jeans.

good is that?
One
of the movies star's is a blue Australian Cattle
Dog called Zip, who plays Gates' side
kick, and as is the case with many side kicks,
this dogs a real scene stealer.
Anyone
who's owned an Australian Cattle Dog, knows
how smart they are, and the special bond that
the breed forms with their owner.

this well made film.

Note about Color Color
variances caused by individual computer monitors
are beyond our control. Light
colors will reflect heat the best - while
dark colors will retain the heat the most
- with black being the worst for staying hot
(black absorbs sunlight). However black is
the most formal color so bowlers and top hats
were generally black or dark gray. For the
first 15-20 years cowboy hats were marketed
- your choice of color was black and about
3 shades of brown.

on the small screen. James Drury, Doug McClure,
and Lee J. Cobb, were the key actors, and the
series writers were very good.

worn by the likeable Doug McClure, in the named
role.
Jimmy Stewart made a lot of great western's;
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962),
Winchester '73 (1950) and The Naked
Spur in 1953 are just a few. Jimmy favored
this hat design in several of his westerns -
and it sure suited him.

the left on the Dusty Augustus; medium would
be like the dusting on the Rossiter; and heavy trail dust looks

is a similar process that costume designers
apply to hats in the movies and t. v. Looks

Holden and Richard Widmark are the stars of
this slow moving western story set near the
end of the Civil War. Not a lot of action in
this flick, but some very interesting hats.
If you watch the movie, you may find it hard
to believe that any soldier would wear such
a filthy falling-apart-hat. Then you realized
a hat such as this was the Colonel's badge of
courage, dirty yes, but a comrade that lived
through the horrors of the war, and survived.
Just like Widmark's character Col. Tom Rossiter.
The
hat ships clean and unsoiled. The hat at left

in the John Ford Cavalry Trilogy - this is the
same look sported by John Wayne in those three
great movies: She Wore a Yellow Ribbon;
Fort Apache, and Rio Grande.
This
was Wayne's favourite hat and he wore it over,
and over again in his movies. Even as a Big
Game Hunter/Guide, with a young Sophia Loren,
as they searched for a treasure city in Legend
of the Lost, (1957).
The
crown has the unique "diamond" design,

How
to make an Old West Character Cowboy Hat
Now that you've seen our great

Years
ago I read a story about how Tom Mix used to
crease and work all his custom hats himself
in the shower. So I decided to take his advice
and am more than pleased with the results. The
amount of time it takes is up to you. I had
the Ellsworth fashioned in less than 5 minutes
- then a further half hour fine tuning the look.
The steps I went through are pretty simple.
