Traditional Hoodoo formations are found in many parts of the world - this shot is taken just outside of the Black Hills of South Dakota in an area call the "Spires". Geologically Hoodoo's are formed by ancient oceans drying up and the silt and sand (and million of biological components) compressing to form sandstone and the such. Over millions of years the area gets buried and then resurfaces in upheavals. Over millions of years the sandstone gets carved by wind, rain, frost, and flowing water to form distinctive and unique shapes. This type of terrain can be rich in fossils, and Dinosaur National Park in Alberta, Canada is one such area that has yielded many dinosaur remnants.
