Boss
of the Town
Crown:
Open
OR Texas Flat
Brim: Flat OR Kettle Curl
Bound
Hatband: 1 1/4" Satin with bow.
Color as shown: Black and undyed natural
The
first Boss of the Plains was sold in Central
City Colorado in 1865, and quickly became a
marketing marvel. Everyone in the west had to
have one, and Stetson was hard pressed to keep
up with the demand. Most people think John B.
Stetson invented the Boss of the Plains. He
did not. Mister Stetson was a talented promoter
and marketer - and there in lay his gift. Christy's
Hats of Bristol, England, held the patent on
this design and after losing a lengthy court
battle, Stetson ended up having to pay a licensing
fee to Christy's Hats for the use of the Boss
of the Plains design. No fooling. |

The
Boss of the Town - at top and left - is
similar to the one Kurt Russell wears
as Wyatt Earp in Tombstone. Flat
brim, with a rounded or open crown. The
one below left is shown in undyed natural
and has a Texas Flat Crown and bound edge
- like the cowpoke above right. |

Here's
a great looking hat for the range or the town.
A little taller Boss of the Plains with a slight
kink on the left side of the brim.
Powers
Boothe created a powerful character, with his
portrayal of Cy Tolliver in the series Deadwood.
The character was threatening, sadistic, and
with virtually no socially redeeming traits.

OUR
MOST COMMON HAT QUESTION
Q: I'm looking for a ____ Hat. I checked your product
catalogue and didn't see it. Can you make it?
A: Yes. As I'm sure you can appreciate it's just not
possible to show all the different variations of crowns
and brims. If it's made from fur-felt and you can supply
us a good picture - yes we can make it. Generally we
already carry the same style of hat, we just shape it
based on the photo or if it's a movie hat we shape it
from watching the movie and seeing the hat from all
possible angles to get the look just so. We can do
up to a 7" (inch) high crown and a 6" wide
brim. Click for

Cattle
Baron
Crown:
Modified Cattle Man
Brim: Pencil rolled; hand shaped and Bound
Hatband: 1" Satin with Bow
Color as shown: Chocolate
Even
this cattleman crease has an old west look to
it. Crown creases originated by working cowboys,
so they could easily pick up their hats. The
modern cattleman's crease we associate more
with Rodeo cowboys, Country Music, and that
whole culture. This crown shape comes from the
last decade of the 19th century - and today
variations of it are seen more than any other
crown working.

Butch Cassidy Bowler to the left is an example
of likely the most common headware in the mid

Trail
Dust
Many
customers have been requesting that we dirty
up their new hats to make them look trail worn.
Pictured at right is a Dusty Augustus - our
Augustus
with about 2 years worth of trail dust - as
if a working cowboy had been wearing it.
We've
got three different degrees of trail dust. Light
(add $55.00) - medium (add $75.00), and antiquing
(add $95.00). Light would be what you see at
the right on the Dusty Augustus; medium would
be heavy sweat stains, like Tom Selleck sports
on the Quigley;
and antiquing looks like our Captain
York Cavalry Hat.
This
is a similar process that costume designers
apply to hats in the movies and t. v. Looks
authentic and yer friends will swear yer just
got off a trail drive, or a hitch in the Horse
Cavalry!
You
can add trail dust during the check out process
- or request it when you call your order in.

A
Note about Color
Color
variances caused by individual computer monitors
are beyond our control.
Light
colors will reflect heat the best - while dark
colors will retain the heat the most - with
black being the worst for staying hot (black
absorbs sunlight). However black is the most
formal color so bowlers and top hats were generally
black or dark gray. For the first 15-20 years
cowboy hats were marketed - your choice of color
was black and about 3 shades of brown.
What
you need to know to order with confidence
On our fact page you'll learn
about fur felt, see available colors, and see
step by step instructions for measuring your
head, ordering your custom hat, shipping, and
our refund policy. We also have a section on
general hat care, and Cowboy Hat Etiquette.

Top Hat
Crown: Texas
Straight | Brim: Pencil
Roll Bound
Hatband: 2" Satin with Bow
Color as shown: Charcoal in 5X Beaver fur-felt.
This
was the fashion item that drove the exploration
of North America and established the fur-trade.
Beaver fur, when mixed with rabbit fur and felt
produces a wonderfully waterproof material -
ideal for making hats. The Top Hat is a timeless
wonder still seen when the Upper Crust mingle
at the Opera and other such events. Like the
Bowler, the Top Hat was worn by all classes
of people and seen most everywhere.

Ladies
Fashion Tip!
Get
a plain silk scarf, and a buckle and wrap
it around leaving a healthy tale at the back
- hanging down - now it looks feminine and
period correct. Looks great on the Top Hat,
the Bowler, the Hickock. . .virtually all
our hats would look good in this fashion.
This is exactly what the costume designers
in HBO's Deadwood have done to the
hat of Kim Dickens for the character Joanie
Stubbs.

| How
to make an Old West Character Cowboy Hat
|
| Now
that you've seen our great hats we're sure you'll
want your own Custom Hat - so what are you going
to do with your old one? It'd be a pity to relegate
it to discard. Our
solution is to rotate it out and make a great
Character Hat.
Years
ago I read a story about how Tom Mix used to
crease and work all his custom hats himself
in the shower. So I decided to take his advice
and am more than pleased with the results. The
amount of time it takes is up to you. I had
the Ellsworth fashioned in less than 5 minutes
- then a further half hour fine tuning the look.
