Traditional Old West Dress Hats

Custom Wild West Hats

Two 1870s Dudes showing off their new Boss of the Plains Western Sombrero.

The Last Best Cowboy Hat

In the early days of the western frontier, Top hats, Bowlers, Sailors Caps, and military hats were the most common headwear on the settlers, and adventurers that pushed west into the Great Plains of North America. Back in those days the large brimmed cow boy hats were associated with Cattle men, Texans and other wild western characters. In fact Marshal's like Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson considered most anyone that wore a large brimmed hat to be a trouble maker.

Any well maintained, clean, cowboy or western hat can certainly pass as a dress hat - but back in the 19th century, small brimmed or Town Hats were the norm to wear with a good suit of clothes.

Custom Old West Designs from The Last Best West
We make custom hats the way they did in the old west - one at a time, and believe if you want an authentic Boss of the Plains - you should be able to get the same looking hat that cowboys wore in the old west. We start with the best fur-felt hat body available - made in the USA - and with the skill of our master hatter, fashion as fine a custom western hat as you will find. We can do up to a 7" (inch) crown and a 6" brim.

"Every dog, we are told, has his day, unless there are more dogs than days."  - Bat Masterson

Please Note: Our logo is only on the images NOT the hats.

For the near future we're able to offer 6- 8 week delivery for our quality hand made cowboy hats. For a complete listing of all our hats - click this link for our online catalogue. The Last Best Cowboy Hat. One of a kind Fur-Felt Art.

Boss of the Town
Crown: Open OR Texas Flat
Brim: Flat OR Kettle Curl Bound
Hatband: 1 1/4" Satin with bow.
Color as shown: Black and undyed natural

The first Boss of the Plains was sold in Central City Colorado in 1865, and quickly became a marketing marvel. Everyone in the west had to have one, and Stetson was hard pressed to keep up with the demand. Most people think John B. Stetson invented the Boss of the Plains. He did not. Mister Stetson was a talented promoter and marketer - and there in lay his gift. Christy's Hats of Bristol, England, held the patent on this design and after losing a lengthy court battle, Stetson ended up having to pay a licensing fee to Christy's Hats for the use of the Boss of the Plains design. No fooling.

The Boss of the Town - at top and left - is similar to the one Kurt Russell wears as Wyatt Earp in Tombstone. Flat brim, with a rounded or open crown. The one below left is shown in undyed natural and has a Texas Flat Crown and bound edge - like the cowpoke above right.

OUR MOST COMMON HAT QUESTION
Q: I'm looking for a ____ Hat. I checked your product catalogue and didn't see it. Can you make it?

A: Yes. As I'm sure you can appreciate it's just not possible to show all the different variations of crowns and brims. If it's made from fur-felt and you can supply us a good picture - yes we can make it. Generally we already carry the same style of hat, we just shape it based on the photo or if it's a movie hat we shape it from watching the movie and seeing the hat from all possible angles to get the look just so. We can do up to a 7" (inch) high crown and a 6" wide brim. Click for our other most common questions.

"Cattlemen never retire - they just saddle up and ride on."

A wealthy rancher - circa 1900 - getting ready to go hunting.

Former President Lyndon Baines Johnson favored this design.

Cattle Baron
Crown: Modified Cattle Man
Brim: Pencil rolled; hand shaped and Bound
Hatband: 1" Satin with Bow
Color as shown: Chocolate

Even this cattleman crease has an old west look to it. Crown creases originated by working cowboys, so they could easily pick up their hats. The modern cattleman's crease we associate more with Rodeo cowboys, Country Music, and that whole culture. This crown shape comes from the last decade of the 19th century - and today variations of it are seen more than any other crown working.

Trail Dust
Many customers have been requesting that we dirty up their new hats to make them look trail worn. Pictured at right is a Dusty Augustus - our Augustus with about 2 years worth of trail dust - as if a working cowboy had been wearing it.

We've got three different degrees of trail dust. Light (add $55.00) - medium (add $75.00), and antiquing (add $95.00). Light would be what you see at the right on the Dusty Augustus; medium would be heavy sweat stains, like Tom Selleck sports on the Quigley; and antiquing looks like our Captain York Cavalry Hat.

This is a similar process that costume designers apply to hats in the movies and t. v. Looks authentic and yer friends will swear yer just got off a trail drive, or a hitch in the Horse Cavalry!

You can add trail dust during the check out process - or request it when you call your order in. Orders call toll free: 1-866-207-1909.

A Note about Color
Color variances caused by individual computer monitors are beyond our control.
Light colors will reflect heat the best - while dark colors will retain the heat the most - with black being the worst for staying hot (black absorbs sunlight). However black is the most formal color so bowlers and top hats were generally black or dark gray. For the first 15-20 years cowboy hats were marketed - your choice of color was black and about 3 shades of brown.

What you need to know to order with confidence
On our fact page you'll learn about fur felt, see available colors, and see step by step instructions for measuring your head, ordering your custom hat, shipping, and our refund policy. We also have a section on general hat care, and Cowboy Hat Etiquette.

Ladies Fashion Tip!
Get a plain silk scarf, and a buckle and wrap it around leaving a healthy tale at the back - hanging down - now it looks feminine and period correct. Looks great on the Top Hat, the Bowler, the Hickock. . .virtually all our hats would look good in this fashion. This is exactly what the costume designers in HBO's Deadwood have done to the hat of Kim Dickens for the character Joanie Stubbs.

How to make an Old West Character Cowboy Hat

Now that you've seen our great hats we're sure you'll want your own Custom Hat - so what are you going to do with your old one? It'd be a pity to relegate it to discard. Our solution is to rotate it out and make a great Character Hat.

Years ago I read a story about how Tom Mix used to crease and work all his custom hats himself in the shower. So I decided to take his advice and am more than pleased with the results. The amount of time it takes is up to you. I had the Ellsworth fashioned in less than 5 minutes - then a further half hour fine tuning the look. Click for the rest of the story
