The first Boss of the Plains was sold in Central City Colorado in 1865, and quickly became a marketing marvel. Everyone in the west had to have one, and Stetson was hard pressed to keep up with the demand. Most people think John B. Stetson invented the Boss of the Plains. He did not. Mister Stetson was a talented promoter and marketer - and there in lay his gift. Christy's Hats of Bristol, England, held the patent on this design and after losing a lengthy court battle, Stetson ended up having to pay a licensing fee to Christy's Hats for the use of the Boss of the Plains design. No fooling.

This is more of a Town Hat or Western Dress Hat. The Homburg dent and large Kettle Curl set this hat apart, and make it an excllent choice to be worn with a good suit of clothes. An authentic design from the late 19th century this style of hat was worn all over the world.

Brad Pitt plays a morose Jesse James, who after a life time of being hunted lives in a world of paranoia and self delusion. A dark slow moving western, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford has been called by some people great film making; and maybe it is. The clothes, firearms, acting are all great - but the narrative and the moody staging of the scenes, produces a sad story, reminiscent of the atmospheric westerns of the 1970s. Macabe and Mrs. Miller, and Buffalo Bill and the Indians come quickly to mind.

Powers Boothe created a powerful character, with his portrayal of Cy Tolliver in the series Deadwood. The character was threatening, sadistic, and with virtually no socially redeeming traits. And he wasn't even a politician!

This design was known as the Dakota in the late 1800's and was popular with the more affluent in the Old West. Made famous again in HBO'S raw western, Deadwood, it was the hat worn by Sheriff Bullock. Even this cattleman crease has an old west look to it. Crown creases originated by working cowboys, so they could easily pick up their hats. The modern cattleman's crease we associate more with Rodeo cowboys, Country Music, and that whole culture. This crown shape comes from the last decade of the 19th century - and today variations of it are seen more than any other crown working.

Our Butch Cassidy Bowler to the left is an example of likely the most common headware in the mid to late 1800s in North America. A bowler was worn by all classes of people from butchers in New York to politicians in Washington and the western Outlaw; Butch Cassidy in Wyoming and later; Bolivia.

Trail Dust
Many customers have been requesting that we dirty up their new hats to make them look trail worn. Pictured at right is a Dusty Augustus - our Augustus with about 2 years worth of trail dust - as if a working cowboy had been wearing it.

We've got three different degrees of trail dust. Light (add $55.00) - medium (add $75.00), and heavy (add $95.00). Light would be what you see at the left on the Dusty Augustus; medium would be like the dusting on the Rossitter; and heavy trail dust looks like our Josey Wales.

This is a similar process that costume designers apply to hats in the movies and t. v. Looks authentic and yer friends will swear yer just got off a trail drive, or a hitch in the Horse Cavalry! A Note about Color
Color variances caused by individual computer monitors are beyond our control.
Light colors will reflect heat the best - while dark colors will retain the heat the most - with black being the worst for staying hot (black absorbs sunlight). However black is the most formal color so bowlers and top hats were generally black or dark gray. For the first 15-20 years cowboy hats were marketed - your choice of color was black and about 3 shades of brown.

The Pinkerton

During the Victorian Era {1837-1901} this short top hat was one of the more common hat styles worn throughout the English speaking world. A classic short brimmed western hat from the 1800s it's also the hat worn by Tom Petty in his Traveling Wilburys shows. This style looks great on women.

Classic Top Hat

This was the fashion item that drove the exploration of North America and established the fur-trade. Beaver fur, when mixed with rabbit fur and felt produces a wonderfully waterproof material - ideal for making hats. The Top Hat is a timeless wonder still seen when the Upper Crust mingle at the Opera and other such events. Like the Bowler, the Top Hat was worn by all classes of people and seen most everywhere.
