Colonel Cody's Wild West

Buffalo Bill Cody
William Frederick Cody

In 1897 Buffalo Bill and his Original Wild West show was invited to England to be the American Entertainment for the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Cody and his show was a huge hit, and two years later his Wild West Show returned to tour most of Europe. Bat Masterson
William Barclay Masterson.                                                          Bat's Marshal Badge

In his early twenties Masterson was serving as an army scout, out of Sweetwater, Texas, when he got in a fight over a dancehall girl. His adversary was killed with a bullet thru the heart, the luckless girl died as well, and Masterson was badly wounded in the leg; which caused him to limp thereafter. He took to using a large silver knobbed cane to assist his stride, and when he took up his trade of being a Peace Officer, the cane was often used on an unruly cowboy's head. In recognition of the new sport of Baseball, he was nicknamed Bat; because of his "batting" of skulls with his walking stick. Friend to Luke Short,Charley Bassett, the Earp's, and Doc Holliday, Bat was often seen in his later years, at boxing matches in the New York area as a sportswriter for the New York Morning Telegraph. James Butler Hickock

Wild Bill Hickok
James Butler Hickok

The prototype of the old west pistol fighter, Bill Hickok had the size, the sad eyes and the heroic exploits to make an impression on most any body.  When Dave Tutt bragged he could, "Shoot a bird on the wing", in Springfield, in 1865, Bill Hickok was quick to reply, "Did the crow have a pistol? Was he shooting back? I will be."

There's a number of reasons people say Hickok and Tutt fought, but what ever it was, this is about the only actual documented face off in a dusty street in Old West History. And so on July 21, 1865, in the town square of Springfield, Missouri, Hickok shot dead Davis Tutt, Jr.

Dodge City Marshal

Wyatt Earp
The Story-book Marshal
"Fast is fine - but accuracy is final."                                         Wyatt's Marshal Badge

Wyatt lived to be 80 and died in 1929 - 6 months before the stock market crash that started the Great Depression. In his later years he was befriended by the early Hollywood Movie Stars and was known to the western director John Ford {Stagecoach, My Darling Clementine, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance}. Ford may have been thinking of Wyatt Earp when he said, "When the fact and legend become interweaved, print the legend."

Doc Holliday
J.H. Holliday - Dentist

Likely the most dangerous pistol fighter of his generation, nobody cared much for Doc and he didn't care at all for anyone else. Except for Wyatt and the other Earp brothers, and their friends like Bat Masterson. Doc declared he'd, "Die with me boots on. . . .". But as he succumbed to tuberculosis in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, the last words he uttered as he looked at his feet, were, "I'll be damned." Doc's boots were off.

Poster: Black Bart

Black Bart
The Outlaw Poet

Bart's first stagecoach robbery was reported in August of 1877. His method was simple - he'd wait for the stagecoach around a tight corner, with flour sack over his face (with two holes cut/ripped for the eyes) derby on his head, and shotgun in his arms, wearing a long, linen duster. He'd exchange the contents of the strong box for a copy of some poetry and always signed it, Black Bart, PO-8. Bart was eventually caught - did his time - then disappeared into the pages of old west lore.

George Armstrong Custer
Colonel U.S. 7th Cavalry

Not only was Ulysses Grant a real military genius, he was an astute politician. In 1875 President Grant knew there was a possibility that George Custer could be the Democratic Candidate for the Presidency in the next election. Grant knew Custer; knew he was charismatic, liked to talk, and knew how to do it. Everything the President wasn't. So President Grant had Custer transferred out west, knowing that there'd be a good chance Custer 'd get himself killed. Custer couldn't help himself, and on June 25, 1876 his headstrong, break neck attack methods sealed his fate, and that of his command against the 2000 or more Sioux and Cheyenne at the Little Big Horn or Greasy Grass River.

Henry McCarty?

Billy The Kid
William H. Bonney II
"He was a runaway boy, on a man's frontier, in a wild and lusty time."

He was twenty-one and boldly bragging he'd killed 21 men, as he stood trial for his life. Hard men sat and stood all about him, with sidearms on their hips and many with rifles in their hands. Barely with reason to shave, the wild young man was found quilty and on April 8, 1881, was sentenced by Judge Warren Bristol, to hang by the neck, until, "dead, dead, dead." On April 28, Pat Garrett went off to buy lumber for the gallows, and Billy went to work. There's three different stories on how Billy got his hands on a firearm that morning, but get one he did, and then The Kid cheerfully shot Deputies Bell, and Ollinger, and escaped the makeshift jail at Lincoln, New Mexico. Pat Garrett later said, "I knew now that I would have to kill the Kid. We both knew that it must be one or the other of us, if we ever met." Billy was dead barely 2 months later, from a bullet in the back from Garrett hiding in ambush. Garrett's Badge.

Poster: Butch Cassiday - Sundance Kid.

The Wild Bunch
William Carver, Kid Curry, The Sundance Kid, The Tall Texan, Butch Cassidy.

The Wild Bunch was a loose association of up to a dozen outlaws who banded together under the leadership of Bunch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid to rob banks, trains, and rustle horses and cattle. In November of 1900 – five members of the Wild Bunch meet up in Fort Worth, Texas, to celebrate a good haul on their last robbery. They all went and outfitted themselves in new duds from top to bottom, and then amazingly make the stupid decision to have their photo taken at the John Swartz Studio. The picture of Sundance, William R. Carver (Will Casey), Ben Kilpatrick (The Tall Texan), Harvey Logan (Kid Curry), and Robert Leroy Parker (Butch Cassidy) soon finds itself in the hands of the Pinkerton's, and the chase was on. Not long after the Fort Worth Five photograph is taken, the gang splits up, with the Pinkerton's following Bunch, Sundance, and Etta Place to South America. The Sundance Kid in Calgary.

John Wesley Hardin.

John Wesley Hardin Poster
The Terror of Texas

Wes Hardin was so mean there's a story about Hardin staying at a boarding house - packed full of men. One of the men in the other room was snoring hard enough to bend the walls, and Hardin yelled over for culprit to cease and desist, or face the consequences. The man apologized, then an hour later, started right in snoring again. Wes yanked out his colt revolver and let loose. Did the man die? - who know's; no one's even sure the story ever took place - but with Hardin being as mean as a rattler, it could have. . . . More About Wes Hardin

Of particular help was the Smithsonian Website, the Library, and the archives of the Glenbow Museum in Calgary. And of course those great Hollywood Westerns.
